My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Jeffrey returns to voice Dane Maddock and crew once again. He's a fixed voice in this world, and I love it! He gives characters the accents they are to have from David's writing descriptions. Jeffrey may not have a female voice when he narrates, but that doesn't stop him giving them their own voice and personality. He brings all the characters to life this way.

As you can see from my reading/listening of the series, you do not have to read it in order. I've missed a few books along the way. But I still love the characters and the story and adventure in each book. And I absolutely want the books I've missed, just to get as much of these characters as I can.

I love that David doesn't worry about word count or length of book, but focuses on the story and what's needed to tell it. Totally awesome! We get full movement and information to keep moving forward through out the book. There are traps, fights, and mystery as we go through the adventure with Dane Maddock and Bones.

David takes us on an unexpected adventure with Maddock and Bones as they search for Solomon's ring. These two always find trouble, or I should say trouble finds them. I love their banter and their friendship. They have been through a lot together and it gives them plenty to pick on each other about, and not worry about what they are saying. This is a wonderful friendship!

We come across known people that Dane Maddock crossed paths with in the past and are friends. We also meet new people with the places Maddock and Bones travel to.

Maddock isn't a true believer in spirits or ghosts. This book puts his thoughts on ghosts to the test. And maybe will start to sway Maddock to the believer side. Very interesting touch on the ghosts with Solomon's mines.

This book left me with a few questions that I hope will come up in future books. Like what does the Sisterhood want with Solomon's mines. There has to be something more there, and I am looking forward to finding out what it is!

Another amazing adventure with Dane and Bones. I love my time with their journeys and look forward to many more to come.

Audio Book Review: Beauty and Beastly

Beauty and Beastly

By:  Melanie Karsak

Publish Date:  December 6, 2017, Audiobook Release July 26, 2018

Format:  Audiobook - 6 hrs 4 mins
Narrated By:  Lesley Parkin

Genre:  Steampunk, Fairy Tale

Series:  3rd in Steampunk Fairy Tales series; 1st Book ~ Curiouser and Curiouser

Impression:  Steampunk and magical blend of a classic fairy tale.

Synopsis:
In this tale as old as time, Isabella Hawking must tinker a solution to a heartbreaking mystery.

When Isabelle and her papa set out from London on a sea voyage, Isabelle was thrilled. Visiting foreign courts, learning from master tinkers, and studying new ways to manipulate mechanicals sounded like a dream. But an unexpected gale turns the waters violent, and the ship is lost. Isabelle survives the tempest only to be shipwrecked on a seemingly-deserted island. Dotted with standing stones, faerie mounds, and a crumbling castle, the haunting place hints of a magical past. Isabelle may be an unwitting guest, but her arrival at the forgotten citadel heralds a new beginning for the beastly residents inside.

Beauty and Beastly is a retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tale set in 1814 Regency England.

First Sentence:
"Isabelle, are you coming?"

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles

Audible

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I've listened to Lesley before. She did Curiouser and Curiouser as well. Her proper speech of words and her accent adds to the drawing of the characters. She brings each character to life with their own vocal personality as she narrates, acting out the story for us. I believed the characters as she voiced them with heart.

I really enjoy Melanie's steampunk twist to the fairy tales. She keeps key ingredients but transforms the story. Here we have the rose, the mirror, the garden, the offer for dinner, and Be Our Guest, don't go in this area, spot of missing painting, the library, the dance, and more. But she turns the events to work as a new tale with strong old tale influences. This keeps the story true to it's nature and easily recognizable for all.

I love the creations in the world. The steampunk creations and ideas here. The world shines with the feel of it. Oh the place where the Beast lives. Wow. It sounds stunning and so special in it's own way. It sounds like a place I'd enjoy visiting.

I love how the story is of steampunk and clockwork, but it also holds an element of magic to it. Lovely blend of the two to create this tale. There is magic present in more than one way. There is magic in the world, of course. But there is magic in the relationships created.

*sigh* For me this is a golden charm. I'm afraid if I get going on about the story that I'll give too much away and you won't be able to experience and enjoy it as I did. Melanie is amazing at turning the fairy tale to her telling yet keeping the essence of the story true. I'm once again taken with the talent.

Totally worth listening to the story.

Audio Book Review: Flaming Dove

Flaming Dove

By:  Daniel Arenson

Publish Date:  August 19, 2010, Audiobook Release September 12, 2018

Format:  Audiobook - 9 hrs 54 mins
Narrated By:  Heather Costa

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  Stand alone

Impression:  One person of two places that's looking for peace.

Synopsis:
The battle of Armageddon was finally fought... and ended with no clear victor. Upon the mountain, the armies of Hell and Heaven beat each other into a bloody, uneasy standstill, leaving the Earth in ruins. Armageddon should have ended with Heaven winning, ushering in an era of peace. That's what the prophecies said. Instead, the two armies--one of angels, one of demons--hunker down in the scorched planet, lick their wounds, and gear up for a prolonged war with no end in sight.

In this chaos of warring armies and ruined landscapes, Laila doesn't want to take sides. Her mother was an angel, her father a demon; she is outcast from both camps. And yet both armies need her, for with her mixed blood, Laila can become the ultimate spy... or ultimate soldier. As the armies of Heaven and Hell pursue her, Laila's only war is within her heart--a struggle between her demonic and heavenly blood.

First Sentence:
Something is out there, his thoughts whispered.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles

Audible

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I listened to Heather narrating another authors book prior to this. I enjoyed her tone and narration so wanted to try another of her books. When this one popped up for review, I had to jump at it. I'm glad I did. I've enjoyed Heather's narrative voice as she gives the characters feeling in their voices. She's one that's easy to listen to and is clear.

This book is full of religious base for the characters, it's angels and demons. I'm not one for religion, but this book isn't preaching to me. It's story base. Also, angels and demons aren't as cut and dry in what they do or say as one would think. The story is enjoyable as it's good verses bad. But there is a middle ground too, which is where Laila comes into play.

Okay. I hate Beelzebub. I really do. When I listen to him talk to woman, my blood boils. He's a user and it infuriates me. On the other hand, this is a huge complement to Daniel in writing Beelzebub. If he didn't write his so well, I wouldn't feel this way about him. But at the same time, I'd like to shake Bat El. Even Zarel. When you read the book, you'll understand.

Laila. I love her. She's of both Heaven and Hell but can't reside in either place because both bloods run through her veins which makes both places hurt her in different ways. She's an innocent that suffers from her heritage. An innocent that's pushed to do things she shouldn't have to in order to survive and be left alone. Alone... something she wishes she didn't have to suffer.

The world... There are an extreme few humans remaining and the world has suffered a great Armageddon. Now, Heaven and Hell fight for domain over Earth. When one of the sides win, Earth will be changed to their setting - Hell fire or Angel light. Which side will Laila fight to help? And what will she do to get there? The story is Laila working to find her peace in a world constantly at odds.

This is a stand-alone story that has an ending but also leaves a bit of thought to the reader. I enjoyed this.

Audio Book Review: Straight Outta Fangton

Straight Outta Fangton

By:  C.T. Phipps

Publish Date:  August 18, 2016, Audiobook Release August 28, 2018

Format:  Audiobook - 7 hrs 27 mins
Narrated By:  Cary Hite

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  1st in Straight Outta Fangton series

Impression:  A flip to vampire beliefs in a world fighting for supernatural rights.

Synopsis:
Peter Stone is a poor black vampire who is wondering where his nightclub, mansion, and sports car is. Instead, he is working a minimum wage job during the night shift as being a vampire isn’t all that impressive in a world where they’ve come out to mortals.

Exiled from the rich and powerful undead in New Detroit, he is forced to go back when someone dumps a newly-transformed vampire in the bathroom of his gas station’s store. This gets him fangs-deep in a plot of vampire hunters, supernatural revolutionaries, and a millennium-old French knight determined to wipe out the supernatural.

Sometimes, it just doesn’t pay to get out of the coffin.

First Sentence:
"Who ever heard of a vampire working at a goddamn 7-Eleven?" I muttered, standing there fiddling with the Slurpee machine.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles

Audible

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Did you read the first sentence? Go ahead and read it, I have it just above. I'll wait a moment.....
Done? Cool. That's a corking opening that just made me smile from the beginning. Gives you an idea of the ride you are in for, doesn't it. lol. Yep.

C.T. always has a little humor mixed in to his stories. Something very cool about C.T.'s writing that I've picked up. When you look past the jokes and comedy you see there is something deeper to the story. There's a whole huge world being built, full of supernaturals and rules. The characters are light and fun, but there is more to their being and story that meets the immediate eye. This is what I enjoy in C.T.'s writings, learning what that deeper meaning is and understanding it in relationship to the characters.

This is a first for me listening to Cary Hite. I enjoyed his narration of the book. His voice selection for Peter feels to fit him. The weight in his voice feels to hit the seriousness in Peter yet there is a lightness in the moments Peter is joking. Cary feels to become Peter in the story. There's also different tones and personalities for the other characters present. I do enjoy hearing Thoth. lol. He's cool, an opposite to Peter.

There's a lot of details and history added throughout the book. We learn the history of vampires and of Peter, Melissa, and a few others as we go through the book.

There are small plays on cliches and old beliefs with vampires here. C.T. flips those cliches on their head here and rolls with them. Lol. The Count of Sesame Street. The connection to him in the story... oh it made me laugh yet felt like mind opening.

There are parts that fit the humor that C.T. is known for. But, for me, there wasn't as much in this story as in others. The flipping of what people see as being vampires is more the fun here. This story is a little more straight story with Peter and the trouble brewing in New Detroit. Part of the reason I felt this was with the flashbacks.

Peter has a lot of flashbacks, remembering important moments in his past that relates to his history and vampires around him. All explains what we come across now along with why the system for vampires is the way it is. We even get to see history of a few characters in these flashbacks along with visions from sharing blood.

Vampires do not sparkle. They are dark. Though we see the high life that we expect them to live, there are downfalls for others. Not all vampires live rolling in money, and they have to adjust. We see vampires live all wakes of life as people do.

This book has created the world and characters with some fun twists to the world. I'm set to return for future books with the characters and have fun.

Sunday Post #108

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It's a chance to share news ~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share new about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, I took a minor unexpected hiatus. It's been a ride for the last few weeks. I've been keeping myself overly busy. Editing work, photos, and so much more. Also, my father ended up in the hospital sick.
See, in his condition when he gets sick, he gets rather sick. He suffered a stroke 19 years ago that left his right side paralyzed and not able to speak. He can't connect the hand signals or writing to his brain either, so it's harder to figure out what he needs. But, when you know him, you can make very good educated guesses. And many of the nurses that look at the patient (yes we've had some that don't) can see it too. However, I spend time with him at the hospital to help and keep an eye on him. He's been sent back to the nursing home now, but he's still extremely weak. They'll have lots of therapy for him to get him moving again.
I've had some photo requests. Woot woot. I had a mother of a majorette want photos of her daughter since it was her senior year. I took those Friday night and touched them up for her. I've had a color guard mom request photos too. I made another trip to the Renaissance Festival, unplanned. A friend wanted to go and I was glad to join her. I got some more amazing photos! They have a photo contest so I worked up only 5 and entered them. Will I win? I doubt as I'm not lucky like that, but it's a huge step for me as I've never entered photos for anything before.
And last, but not least as it's been what I've been working on mostly, I've got a huge editing project I'm working on. This last week was a bust in any form of work with dad, so I have to get back to the grind here today.
I'm hoping to be around for the next few weeks as November will be here sooner than expected and that's my month off with NaNoWriMo. I've not announced that I'm doing it. I think I'll wait until the last minute, like usual, to decide. Because of life and all. I had hoped to get a plan for the next book I want to write, but haven't done that either. So....we'll see what strikes me.
Goodreads Synopsis:
Five hundred years after the death of King Arthur, a sadistic tyrant of Visi-Galia, attacks unprotected and vulnerable townships in Gilleon, igniting a deadly chain of events. Because he was unfairly denied a proper chance to compete for valuable mine rights and outbid by a Councilman from Gilleon, he reasons that he can invade Gilleon's vulnerable townships and force the Council to negotiate with him.
Merlin, the lead knight in Lycenea, has foreseen just such a predicament. With the gifts of premonition, telepathy and intelligence, he and 9 of his most formidable knights go into battle against Jason and his force of nine thousand.
At stake is everything. The fate of the prisoners who are awaiting to be sold into slavery rests in the hands of the deadly knights. Specifically, two girls who were attacked in Missalia and are now orphaned, are at the mercy of the sadistic King. Will Merlin and his band of knights be able to rescue them in time?
Adele, the older sister, has plans of her own for escape. Will she prove successful or will her plans be foiled? If she is caught, what will become of her and her sister, Sylvia?
Dante, a boy from Coifen, is also now orphaned. He is the sole survivor of a brutal attack on his family. An unlikely heroine has come to his rescue- a mysterious white wolf. Unfortunately, the attack has left him blind. He and his guardian make their refuge in a remote cave. He clings desperately to the hope that God has spared him for a reason. Every night he goes to bed, he says a prayer to his talisman, the Merlin, a game piece that his father gave him before he was forced to abandon him. It was the last gift he received before all hell broke loose. Will he be rescued? Will he find a permanent haven? His fate also lies in the hands of the Merlin.
Merlin and his troupe lead the Visi-Gauls in a high stakes game of cat and mouse. Jason, though capricious, is not stupid. He uses every means at his disposal to eliminate Merlin. Who will prove the victor? Fighting a severe war of attrition, it seems at times that Jason will inevitably win; but don't count the Merlin out. He is beyond slippery. Every time it seems that Jason has the gifted knight, he is thwarted yet again.
The jaw-dropping confrontation will leave you breathless!
