Audio Book Review: Wasteland

Wasteland

By:  Mur Lafferty

Publish Date:  2008

Format:  Podiobook

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  3rd of The Afterlife series; 1st Book ~ Heaven, 2nd ~ Hell, 3rd ~ Earth

Recommendation:  Oh You've come this far. You have to follow them all the way now! You are dying to know what happens to Kate.

Synopsis:
Daniel has been forced from the afterlife to be exiled in the wasteland, with nothing but his misery and Kate’s dead body. But he is not without power entirely, and he begins to make his way in this world that looks less like a wasteland and more like another world. But the volatile power of the wasteland still touches this new world, and Daniel and his friends must not forget the trouble facing Heaven and Hell.

First Sentence:
"What do you want to do?"

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles

Listen For Free:
PodioBooks  /  iTunes

*I listened to this story for my own enjoyment.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Daniel is exiled with Kate to the wastelands after what happened to both Heaven and Hell at his mistakes. The battle is still being fought, but Daniel and Kate are removed from it. Daniel has lost Kate and the baby Earth. Or has he? What happens to the dead when they die in the Afterlife? If they are together they are stronger and can do what needs to be done....Earth. Things are changing in the Wastelands. Another Earth is created, unintentionally, but it could help in the end goal.

The story does include a quick thought and mention to where the worlds are at this point in the books. I like this refresher worked in. We go on with the story of our duo, but we make full circle in the end, there is still a war being waged between Heaven and Demons. And it seems we'll get back to it in the next story.

It is neat seeing the world they subconsciously created. The animals! Okay, dinosaurs! And the creation of the cities here. The neat influence of gears and steam. The religion that is picked up...oh boy. How Daniel and Kate respond to that Religion. Mur has ties weaved into the world that gives our duo help, and that the troubles are still out there to be tended too.

It seems this story to be where Daniel is revered more on this world. And Kate does the not so nice thing, in this Earth. Nice to see the shoe on the other foot for a bit. Daniel, being a god, deserves to feel some follower love for a bit. Help boost his confidence that I felt had faltered in the last book. He's not absorbed by the worship though. He's not fond of it. He does not let it go to his head and doesn't make Kate feel beneath him. He understands more than any and even jokes about the huge mess he's made.

This story has brought me full circle to worry of the war that's being battled. We might be on to find a few more allies, but we need to get back and help save the Earth along with Heaven and Hell. On to the last story to see how things balance out...

Throwback Thursday (160)

I found this picture of Trinity College Library, and thought it would work for this meme with a little play with lighting and adding the words.

Let's talk about those books already on the shelves, yours or the stores.

I have a post for books I'm looking forward to coming out;
Looking Forward To...
But what about all those wonderful books that are ALREADY on the shelves.

Whether it be on your shelf waiting to be read or on the shelves in the stores waiting for you to give it a good home.

So, I thought I would share a book a week that is just waiting for me to travel through it's world.

Now... where do I start? Lets go by Published Date on the books...

This Week:

I picked this one up for the kiddo. He wanted zombie books in middle school. And I had heard really good things of this series. He read and enjoyed it. Now I need to find time to get to the series.

Goodreads Synopsis:
In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human.

I've heard back from a few bloggers that they would like to join in this meme post, so I'm adding a Linky for you to join in.  Grab the picture above, and join in.  All I ask, is if you can acknowledge my blog in the post so others know where to come back to.

Book Review: Captain's Share

Captain's Share

By:  Nathan Lowell

Publisher:  Podiobooks

Publish Date:  2010

Format:  Podiobooks

Genre:  Science Fiction

Series:  5th in Golden Age of the Solar Clipper series; 1st Book ~ Quarter Share, 2nd Book ~ Half Share, 3rd Book ~ Full Share, 4th Book ~ Double Share

Recommendation:  Ooooh yes. You've got to be hooked on Ish and his life in the Deep Dark Space by now. Things are switched around for Ish now.

Synopsis:
A shuffling of cabins puts Ishmael Horatio Wang in command of the worst ship in the fleet.  He learns that being Captain doesn't make you infallible and that life in the Captain's Cabin is filled with new kinds of challenge as he tries to keep the ship moving, the crew out of trouble, and turn a profit to earn his Captain's Share.  The ship where the officers outnumber the crew, how can he manage to keep everybody happy?  Welcome to the SC Agamemnon.

First Sentence:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles

**I listened to this story for my own enjoyment.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ish has been on the William Tinker about thirteen years now. Things are going well in the deep dark space as he sits as First Mate to his Captain Freddie. Until there is an abandoned ship found floating through space. What they find there is one thing that will never leave Ish's mind and a stark reminder of the deep dark space they fly in. Ish's work with this abandoned ship may bring him to the attention of others, having him invited to sit for Captains test. Things are about to change with a new Captain coming to the William Tinker, and Ish now with his Captain license can take command of the ship the Captain is moving up from - The SC Agamemnon. But with the reputation of the crew bring Ish down, or can he make a difference there as well?

The first episodes of what they find in the lost ship reminds me of a Star Trek episode. The ship is a prime example of what could happen if you don't take care of your ship. Tragic and scary to think on.

Ish has a wife who waits for him to return to station and he passes his Captains test... The things that Ish should have, yet I wonder about his wife. Even though they've been together for seven years, I remember the feeling on the ship with Pip's Aunt and Uncle. That's what feels natural for Ish, to me. But if this works, my hats off to him.

Very touching with the relationships, friends and how people come and go in the lives here. Everyone moves on and ages. And I got a kick out of how much everyone knows Ish. They just know he's going to take the offered Captain-ship, no matter the reputation of the ship and crew. And, maybe that is a bonus - a challenge - for him. He is so predictable. LOL!

Ish's new ship has three of the biggest trouble makers in the fleet, who don't step over the line to in order to be removed. Ish is amazing with these people. Starting with the love for coffee and food, all else will follow suit. He works with the good in each person, not the same as others who have been scolding for their wrongs. Ish learns what their specialties are by what others notice as wrong. As I've said in previous books, Ish is great at finding what people are amazing at. He's firm with them yet wants these people here and to do their best. Even when Ish reprimands he makes the crew member feel comfortable and wanted at the same time.

I do miss the old friends we started with. The new crew reminds me of Pip and others, yet a little differently. Ish tries a few tricks from his first First Mate, Maxwell. It's great to see what he does with these people. The trading comes up, one crew member reminds me of Pip with happenings and his ability to pick cargo.

One thing to remember, 'the crew follows their Captain's lead', and this crew does. To me, even early on, Ish seemed to fit in here. This crew is his family, and through the book it felt comfortable here with Ish. Nothing like when he first boarded the William Tinker, now that was rough! Ish uncovers an amazing crew and family here.

We see new places and further out in the deep dark space. Ish makes a run that shares with us more that's out there in space than we have seen before. We even learn about space as we go too, even if it helps or hurts Ish or others. Always interesting to learn what will be out in the vast dark space beyond.

In the end, I felt there should be more story here on Ish, the new crew member, and the crew in relation to new member. As if they all are in a transition of their lives.

I will be rushing into the next book with Ish. I can't seem to get enough of these stories!

Rounding Out a Series...

I'm thrilled to have her back again. Though it's a little bitter sweet as it's for the end of an amazing trilogy full of sexy superheroes. If you haven't checked them out yet, you most definitely should. It's a must! However I'm thrilled to have Starla back to share on Rounding Out a Series. (You can also read my quick thoughts on HEX, although it's pretty much go buy the trilogy! You'll want them. :D )

Please welcome Starla Huchton to the blog! (And, after you read this don't fret. Please don't. You will then need to go check out Starla's blog for more information: http://www.starlahuchton.com/super-six-the-grand-finale/)

On Rounding Out a Series...

So, I guess, for a writer, this is a really big deal. Evolution: HEX marks the third and final book in the Evolution series. I honestly didn’t realize exactly how final it would feel hitting publish. Typically, you would think the mixed bag of feelings that is a series finale would come the minute you write The End.

But that’s not really the case. You don’t say goodbye to those characters and that world when you write the last sentence. After that, you still get more time to read over all the words and fix all the things and close up any plot holes you can find... Basically, you’re granted a reprieve from bidding farewell to it. Editing and revising allows you a grace period to let it sink in. Truthfully, though, it doesn’t really feel like the end until you hit publish and send those words off into the world. They belong to other people then, and the author no longer has control over what happens. It’s scary, and you can’t help wondering if you didn’t miss something that’s going to ruin the whole thing or forget to correct some punctuation that will drive you crazy when you look back on it in a few months. The what-ifs can drive you insane if you let them, but sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and let go.

The Evolution series was written over the course of four months. It was a crazy fast ride, but so amazingly fun that I honestly wonder if I’ll ever have that kind of creative madness come over me again. I miss the thrill of telling Candace’s story. I miss the snarky conversations with Jackson and Gabe. I miss the brainstorming sessions with my Creative Sounding Boards as I gave them the books chapter by chapter and figured out where to go next. I want to go back and experience it all over again.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of the readers as they dive into the books for the first time. I want to be with them in their heads and feel them getting sucked into that world the way I did. At least, I hope that’s what happens.

But with all that anxiety about “did I get it right?” comes the satisfaction that I’ve finished a long task. I’m pretty confident in this series, and I think the last book provides good closure to the story arc. It’s been a wonderful journey with these characters, and I’ve loved learning about them and sharing them with everyone.

Something in me might not be quite ready to let go of the superheroes yet, however, and I think the future will hold more fantastic stories in this world.

Genre:  Science Fiction Romance - Superheroes!

Recommendation:  Seriously!?! You are here? You should have picked this up on release day, especially after SAGE's ending. GO GET IT! ALL OF THEM!!

Synopsis:
A lie is a prison without bars.

A captive of the enemy, Candace is forced to confront mistakes and regrets from both sides of the battlefield, including her own. Nothing is simple, and lines in the sand that were once clear have become blurred and indistinguishable. Even the unlikely love she found teeters on the edge of uncertainty.

Purchase At:
Amazon   /   Barnes & Nobles

**I beta read this book for the author.

My Thoughts and Summary:
I don't want to say to much and give away the ending of this AMAZING! trilogy. You have to read it to get the full effect and the answers.

Candace is on the other side of the fence now. She's seeing things that she was told about. But are they the way she was told they were? Candace is a strong willed and minded person. She experiences and then evaluates the way things are considering what she's being told. That's what makes Candace stand out for me. She's grown through the trilogy and sees things completely different than she did the day she stood at her mundane job stocking shelves wishing to be a superhero. There is a whole different world here that she's lived (living) through.

Heavens around, above, where ever! I loved this book. It ended the way it needed, and no you are not left with a cliffhanger ending or feeling sad. You'll like it. It is the conclusion to the trilogy. Yet I would love to see a future in this world. I think there could easily be a next generation. ;) But, that's another story.

We get all we loved from this series here - the action, the love, the mystery, and more as we get the ANSWERS! And an insider look at the world of superheroes, and the things they don't want you to know about.... Yes secrets. lol.

You need it, especially after the ending of SAGE. You'll love it. On that note, I'm leaving you. Now, go get it! What are you still here for? Go!

Whether it be on your shelf waiting to be read or on the shelves in the stores waiting for you to give it a good home.

Now... where do I start? Lets go by Published Date on the books...

This Week:

Aaah. I first picked this one up as an ebook. But when I had the chance to win a print (as I prefer them more) I jumped to enter. And won. :) I'm really looking forward to diving into this series.

Goodreads Synopsis:
Nyx had already been to hell. One prayer more or less wouldn't make any difference...

On a ravaged, contaminated world, a centuries-old holy war rages, fought by a bloody mix of mercenaries, magicians, and conscripted soldiers. Though the origins of the war are shady and complex, there's one thing everybody agrees on...

There's not a chance in hell of ending it.

Nyx is a former government assassin who makes a living cutting off heads for cash. But when a dubious deal between her government and an alien gene pirate goes bad, Nyx's ugly past makes her the top pick for a covert recovery. The head they want her to bring home could end the war--but at what price?

The world is about to find out.

Audiobook Review: Last Man Home

Last Man Home

By:  John Mierau

Publish Date:  May 20, 2010, Audiobook May 12, 2014

Publisher:  ServingWorlds.com

Format:  Audio book from Audible

Genre:  Science Fiction

Series:  Novella

Recommendation:  Yes, for a quick action and character filled story.

Synopsis:
Eight years after the war with the Alotans, Jake, Teddy, Gris and Dru are the only survivors of Tom Callahan's squad. They're gathering in the small town Jake calls home for their annual reunion-but this year a new face wants to join in. One of Jake's alien army buddies will crack when he faces a monster from his past, and it's down to him to save the Alotan going by the name of... Tom Callahan.

First Sentence:
I sprayed a mouthful of beer all over Teddy and Gris when the Bug stepped into the Wildlife Tavern.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Audible

Listen For Free:
iTunes

**I listened to this book for my own enjoyment.

My Thoughts and Summary:
I'm not going to give a summary of this book. John's summary hits it on the nose, and if I try I might spoil the story for you.

The neat thing here, the characters are all different. By different I don't only mean personality, they are of an alien nature as well. And it makes the story work and believable. This story takes place on Earth and our main voice telling the story is human but his colleagues are other than human. I like this draw here. It makes the story different and I want that.

Oh the things Jake talks about having done to him and the soldiers when serving. It's neat what they did to them, but I can feel for the men at the same time.

I've learned John Mierau has a wide realm he writes in, and that works great for me as I love getting something different each time. John takes advantage of each word he writes, drawing the world while describing the characters and moving the story/plot along. In the suspense full moments, John has written it to move quick yet draw me to hang on each word. The narrator has read it to compliment the writing with his innuendos and speech annunciations - like he's living the moments.

I like the narrators voice and reading of this story. The pacing and vocal attitude for each character and happening were well orchestrated. He even talked in different speech patterns for the characters and their species. I could almost hear the narrator on a tv show - maybe Defiance or something.

By the end of the story I felt the closeness of the crew that was formed from what they lived through at war. How they are like brothers. I felt the sadness and honor for Tom and the characters. The battle Jake is fighting for this bug, the kind he once hated and killed, but to learn the true fate of the man who's name the bug took.

Audio? Podcast? What? Take 1

The curiosity bug has bitten me. As many of you know, I listen to lots of Podcasts. I've heard many who say they don't listen to or know of or what Podcasts are. And I see that many book readers listen to Audiobooks.

I'd like to share information with you, and myself, about Podcasts in comparison/reference to Audiobooks. In order to do so I have a series of questions I'm going to ask over the next 4-5 weeks (pending if more questions come up as I go that will help explain Podcasts and share them with you). I'd like to lead to an end discussion with a few authors (audio & podcast) on what the difference is between Audiobooks and Podcasts. And maybe if there are a few myths floating around we can talk about those too.

This week we are going to start easy.

Those of you that listen to Audiobooks, do you listen to Podcast stories?

  1.    Yes
  2.    No
  3.    What are Podcasts?

You can anonymously take the poll on the sidebar. If you have anything further you'd like to add or questions on the two, please leave them in the comments or feel free to email me at:

Thank you!

Mythical Monday (57)

It seems there are many books based on or influenced by Myths and Mythological Beings.

There are so many different Mythology and Mythological Beings recorded. Some are very popular and well known, others not so much. There are many similar beings, yet different depending on the culture it’s based in.  The definition of Myth covers about anything in the Urban Fantasy/Fantasy realm to me.

I’ve invited authors to share briefly the Mythological being or Myth that influenced their character(s) or story, or what their character(s) are based on influencing their books.  Hosting here, one author and being or myth per week.

This week we have:
Author Kerry Schafer
Talking of Dragons.

Let There Be Dragons

Why dragons?

The world of the Between is open to pretty much any sort of creature that has ever squeaked, creaked, or roared its way into a tale (or a nightmare). And, in fact, there are plenty of other creatures that do find their way into the books, some of them entirely of my own creation. The Slime Toad, for instance, big as a dragon with dangerous teeth and a sticky tongue and acid slime that will burn holes in your skin. Or the flying fire ants that literally set you alight wherever they touch clothing or skin.

But dragons are different. Dragons go deep.

They wind their sinuous way through the mythologies and fairy stories of nearly every culture. Some breath fire and destruction across the skies, steal the villagers sheep, burn their cottages and eat their young. In fairy tales they are often cast as the greatest obstacle a young hero must face in his pursuit of both a princess and a kingdom. In the biblical version of the epic clash between God and the Devil, the dragon represents the greatest evil possible, wreaking destruction even in heaven.

Fire dragons, water dragons, dragons of ice and air. Sometimes greedy, sometimes wise, always powerful and capable of great destruction.

When a dragon finds its way onto the pages of a book—no matter what kind of a dragon the writer turns it into—all of those historical and mythical echoes come along. Which is awesome all in itself.

Add in the tales from eastern mythology about the dragon ladies, and it just keeps getting better and better. Yep, the oriental folk stories had dragon shifters long before modern writers decided to tap into that idea. One of these is the tale of Toyotama-Hime, The Dragon Princess of the Sea. It goes, more or less, like this.

Once upon a time, Toyotama-Hime lived at the bottom of the sea with her father. One eventful day a young hunter chose to spend his time fishing rather than hunting. His name was Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto. (I am not going to type that again, and I have no suggested translation, so we're going to call him Mikoto). Mikoto had borrowed his brother's best fishing hook for the day, and somehow managed to lose it. He was so desperate to find it that he ventured below the waves and down to the sea bed in a quest to retrieve it.

In the way of fairy tales, Toyotama-Hime saw him and fell instantly in love. She begged her father to help the handsome young man, and her father, who could refuse her nothing, agreed. As fate would have it, when Mikoto saw Toyotama-Hime in her human form he fell in love with the beautiful princess, forgetting all about his brother and the fishing hook. The two were married and lived happily together, but only for a time.

There came a day when Mikoto began to pine for the world above the sea - for the wind in the trees and the grass beneath his feet. He begged his beloved wife to come live on dry land with him and, because she loved him and was pregnant with his child, she agreed. The young hunter built a house for her and for a short while they were happy once more.

When the time came for her to give birth, the princess urged her husband to leave her alone, and not to look until she gave him permission. Long he waited outside, pacing and worrying. At last he broke his promise to his wife and peered in through a window. There he saw a black dragon holding a newborn baby. Toyotama-Hime was so embarrassed to be seen as her dragon self, that she fled back to her old home beneath the sea.

No HEA for this couple.

Being a dragon shifter causes some complications for Vivian, the heroine of the Between stories as well. She's chosen to spend her life as a healer and is working as an ER doc in a small town when things get weird. Discovering that she's got some dragon blood in her is a little, shall we say, disconcerting for her and learning to accept this aspect of who and what she is causes her distress along the way.

To make matters worse, there is Zee. Zee is born to be a dragon slayer; this is as deeply embedded in his genetic code as Vivian's dragon nature is in hers. As you can imagine, this serves to complicate the love that is growing between them.

Will they do better than Toyotama-Hime and Mikoto in the HEA department? Only time will tell. In the meantime, as the books are more adventure than romance, they've got a lot of other things to think about. Dangers to face. Slime toads, for example. Nefarious plots. And a dark and powerful dragon who wants to destroy all the worlds.

Hey. Another Sunday. I don't know what's come over me. I slept most of the day Saturday. I seem to be worn out by the weekend and have one day that is all about trying to catch up on sleep. I think I need to get more active to help counter that, time to try and sneak exercise in my schedule too. Hahaha. Alright, but seriously I do.

As for the book front, it's been slow going here. I get to read a few pages a night but nothing that really makes a dent in my current read. And it's nothing to the current reads fault, it's me and my relationship with time these days. (It's a little on the strained side.)

I decided when I'll be celebrating the blogs 5th birthday. :) It's going to be the week of August 11th. A little after it's birthday, but when time will allow it party it up. So I'll start sending a few authors emails to see if they would like do join with a post. I also have a few books to give away. :) And I'm still working on the small book tour for RIVER by Skyla Dawn Cameron. If you'd like to join (it's only guest posts by her) please let me know and I'll add you to the list that I'll be emailing shortly.

Purchased/Winnings/Gifts:
Deadroads by Robin Riopelle
Goodreads Synopsis:
Lutie always wanted a pet ghost—but the devil’s in the details.

The Sarrazins have always stood apart from the rest of their Bayou-born neighbors. Almost as far as they prefer to stand from each other. Blessed—or cursed—with the uncanny ability to see beyond the spectral plane, Aurie has raised his children, Sol, Baz, and Lutie, in the tradition of the traiteur, finding wayward spirits and using his special gift to release them along Deadroads into the afterworld. The family, however, fractured by their clashing egos, drifted apart, scattered high and low across the continent.

But tragedy serves to bring them together. When Aurie, while investigating a series of ghastly (and ghostly) murders, is himself killed by a devil, Sol, EMT by day and traiteur by night, Baz, a traveling musician with a truly spiritual voice, and Lutie, combating her eerie visions with antipsychotics, are thrown headlong into a world of gory sprites, brilliant angels, and nefarious demons—small potatoes compared to reconciling their familial differences.

From the Louisiana swamps to the snowfields of the north and everywhere in between, Deadroads summons you onto a mysterious trail of paranormal proportions.

Free Ebooks:
Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter By Nikki Jefford
Goodreads Synopsis:
If there is one thing eighteen-year-old Aurora Sky wants, it's to get off the iceberg she calls home. Being kissed before she graduates wouldn't hurt either.

Then a near-fatal car wreck changes everything. Government agents step in and save Aurora's life in exchange for her services as a vampire hunter. In Alaska. Basically she's a glorified chew toy. All thanks to her rare blood type, which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis right before she has to finish the job... by hand.

Now Aurora's only friends are groupies of the undead and the only boy she can think about may very well be a vampire.

(Mature YA, new adult series that becomes progressively more mature. Underage drinking, sexual situations, mild language and blood sucking.)

Free Audio Books/Stories:
Whispers in the Wood by Chris Lester
Goodreads Synopsis:
A man comes to Metamor City bearing a mysterious instrument, a violin with seemingly supernatural powers. A trail of death follows him. Lothanasi Agent Janus Starson brings in his best paranormal investigator, the telepath Abbey Preston, to help him uncover the violin’s secrets — and stop it before it kills again. A dark tale of mystery and murder in the sci-fi/fantasy world of Metamor City.
